Contemporary Art: Too Alive To Sell - Nina Boyo
The Two Worlds of Art
Art is a reflection of humanity, a living conversation between tradition and innovation. Yet, we often hear claims that classical art is vanishing, drowned out by non-traditional forms. This couldn't be further from the truth. Classical art still thrives, but our focus is skewed. Too often, we judge what’s new instead of celebrating how traditional and non-traditional art coexist.
As a contemporary artist, I’ve seen this tension firsthand. It’s not just about the art but about the artist. Society elevates the works of long-departed creators while living artists often struggle to find their place. What if we shifted this narrative? What if we learned to embrace all forms of art without judgment?
The Challenges of a Living Artist
Being a living artist today is like standing in a crowded marketplace trying to be seen.
The Market
I’ve tried platforms meant to showcase talent, only to be turned away not because of my art’s quality but because I lacked fame. It felt as though I was too alive to sell. Many young artists face this paradox, judged before they’ve even had a chance to be discovered. The Economy
Art is a passion, but it’s rarely a stable career. Most of us juggle other jobs to make ends meet. Funding options often come with obstacles that discourage rather than empower. For those starting out, financial support is almost out of reach. The Lack of Mental Support
Perhaps the hardest challenge is emotional. Artists often walk this path alone without encouragement from family, friends, or peers. Everyone longs for support, but few are willing to give it. This lack of connection makes us hesitate to share our work, afraid it will go unseen or unappreciated.
Changing the Narrative
Change begins with us, as artists and as a society.
For my part, I choose to support living artists in any way I can. I buy local art, give compliments, and offer constructive feedback. Sometimes, all it takes is a word of encouragement to spark someone’s creativity.
We don’t need to be wealthy to support art. A like, a kind comment, or a shared post can build a foundation of support. Imagine
a world where every artist feels valued, where creativity flourishes because it is nurtured by others.
Art is for everyone. Let’s keep it alive by supporting those who are brave enough to create it today.
